The book I had planned to feature for this week’s Sunday Spotlight is currently waiting for me at our local post office. While I wait to get my hands on it, I’m sharing several of my go-to books from when I worked with children in my counseling office.
Below you’ll find a brief overview of each book or series. If you’d like ideas for expanding social-emotional learning with any specific title, let me know. I’d be happy to put something together for you!
Social-emotional learning books are a powerful way to teach life skills while keeping kids engaged and interested. I’ve included links to at least one book from each series. Please note: these are affiliate links, which means I may receive a small commission if you purchase through them at no additional cost to you. Just click on the pictures to access them. Most are available on Kindle Unlimited for subscribers.

Ninja Life Hacks series:
By Mary Nhin
With over 100 books in the series, Ninja Life Hacks focuses on a wide range of life skills in ways that are easy for children ages 4–10 to understand. Because there are so many titles, there truly is a book for almost every need, from managing frustration to building confidence.

A few of my personal favorites.
The World Needs Who You Were Made to Be:
by Joanna Gaines
This beautiful book celebrates the unique traits each child brings into the world and how those qualities can be shared with others. Written for ages 4–8, it encourages children to embrace who they are.
This is one of my personal favorites. I gift it to friends and family whenever they welcome a new little one.

Listening to my Heart:
by Gabi Garcia
This book gently teaches self-compassion. The main character shows kindness to others but struggles to extend that same grace to herself after making a mistake. It’s a powerful reminder that we deserve kindness, too.
Intended for ages 4–7, this title is also available in Spanish.
The WorryWoos Series:
by Andi Green
This playful rhyming series teaches emotional regulation and coping skills in an engaging way. The books are geared toward ages 3 and up.
One of the first titles I read was The Very Frustrated Monster. The main character wrestles with thoughts like “Why me?” and “It’s not fair!” when his day isn’t going as planned. Through perspective-taking, he learns how to work through those big emotions.

A Little Spot Series:
by Diane Alber
With 50+ books and companion activities, this series focuses on emotions and social-emotional skills for children ages 3–6. The visual “spot” characters help make abstract feelings more concrete and understandable for young learners.

The Magical Yet:
by Angela DiTerlizzi and Lorena Alvarez Gomez
This book, and the series that follows, focuses on developing a growth mindset. It introduces children to the powerful shift from “I can’t do this” to “I can’t do this yet.”
Using relatable examples (like learning to ride a bike), the story teaches perseverance and thought reframing in a way children can easily grasp.

If there’s a specific skill you’re working on with your child or students, managing big emotions, building confidence, handling frustration, developing empathy, or strengthening a growth mindset, let me know. I’d love to recommend a book and share extension activities to support deeper learning.
